Bacillus thuringiensis biomass live cells and spores of Bacillus thuringiensis bacteria and their metabolic products (proteins that are toxic to some insects when eaten, but not others).
Bacillus thuringiensis is a gram-positive, soil-dwelling bacterium, the most commonly used biological pesticide worldwide. During sporulation, many Bacillus thuringiensis strains produce crystal proteins (proteinaceous inclusions), called delta endotoxins, that have insecticidal action.
Bacillus thuringiensis has a dual action: it is activated in the insect gut and causes its dysfunction, and inhibits RNA synthesis in insect cells.
As a result of the action Bacillus thuringiensis on insects, including sublethal doses, metamorphosis is disturbed, digestion processes are inhibited, fertility of females and viability of the next generations are reduced.
Bacillus thuringiensis is safe for humans, warm-blooded animals, birds, fish, bees and the environment.
Application
When entering the body of caterpillars (larvae) with plant leaves, the substance causes intestinal toxicosis (inhibition of digestive enzymes secretion and intestinal dysfunction) in pests.
Damage to the intestinal tract initially impairs the caterpillar's ability to digest food and causes suspension of feeding. Insect appetite decreases a few hours after the drug penetrates into the body of the pest.
Then the toxin activated in the intestinal tract causes damage to the inner gut lining of the caterpillar, as a result of which the osmotic equilibrium is disturbed, leading to seepage of alkaline gut contents into the body cavity. Spores germinate, bacteria multiply in the body cavity, septicemia is formed, and the caterpillars die in 1-4 days.
Mass death of pests occurs on 5-7 days.
Bacillus thuringiensis is safe for humans, warm-blooded animals, birds, fish, bees and the environment.
